Building a City of Changemakers
The ‘Building a City of Changemakers’ project is a 12-month partnership between the University of Manchester and One World Together that aims to deepen build changemaking across Greater Manchester. The collaborative approach sees us develop work with teachers and young people, Manchester Museum and Ashoka. The project runs until Spring 2027.
Building gender equality and social inclusion in volunteer firefighting services in North Macedonia
This is a collaborative project between Operation Florian and the Women’s Organisation of Sveti Nikolae. Funded by the British Embassy of North Macedonia, Laura and Helen, along with Steve Jordan, Millie Frost and Emma Sinclair of the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service were exploring gender participation in the volunteer fire service in North Macedonia.
Engaging communities of young people with museums as spaces of hope and imagination
In this British Academy funded project and collaboration with Manchester Museum, museums are no longer seen as spaces just for the past: the reimagining to use them as places to imagine the future we have created is the first step towards co-creating a manifesto-zine that connects imagination, hope and changemaking.
Fire Justice Hub
The Fire Justice Hub is a space for connection. We bring together people who share our commitment to understanding and responding to fire from a social justice lens. This means connecting fire and rescue services, social scientists, academic researchers from across disciplinary boundaries, fire safety and burns professionals, policy makers, and more.
Core members of the Fire Justice Hub: Helen Underhill, Laura Hirst, Kanysile Brukwe, Steve Jordan and SJ Cooper-Knock (image above).
From Global Citizenship to Next Generation for Change
Emerging from Prof. Niki Banks’ research at the University of Manchester, this project worked with a secondary school in Greater Manchester to pilot a series of sessions exploring themes related to global development and charitable giving.
Learning through Changemaking - Human Systems and Change
Learning in Changemaking: Helen’s fellowship included facilitating opportunities for changemakers to reflect on what and how we learn when actively engaged in changemaking processes or organisations.
Project: Gender, Fire Risk and Education in Informal and Tented Settlements (Lebanon)
Working with Operation Florian, Save the Children Lebanon, and UNHCR, we supported the development and delivery of fire safety and risk reduction training materials and a train-the-trainer programme.
Project: Fire Risk Reduction Assessment of Vulnerable Displaced Syrian Populations and Host Community in Lebanon
This project led to the development of a Fire Risk Reduction Assessment framework which has been critical in highlighting the need for critically engaged, interdisciplinary work on fire risk.
